Gloucester

Gloucester is a port , linked via the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal to the Severn estuary, allowing larger ships to reach the docks than would be possible on the tidal reaches of the river itself. The wharves, warehouses and the docks themselves fell into considerable disrepair until their renovation in the 1980s . They now form a public open space. Some warehouses now house the National Waterways Museum , others were converted into luxury residential apartments, shops and bars.

The traditional existence of a British settlement at Gloucester (Caer Glow, Gleawecastre, Gleucestre) is not confirmed by any direct evidence, but Gloucester was the Roman municipality of Colonia Nervia Glevensium , founded in the reign of Nerva . Parts of the walls can be traced, and many remains and coins have been found, though inscriptions are scarce.

Things to do

Gloucester Cathedral , in the north of the city near the river, originates in the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter in 681 . It is the burial place of King Edward II of England , Walter de Lacy and was recently used in scenes for the Harry Potter films.

Gloucester's Medieval Fayrein june .Comprising over 60 stalls selling everything from wooden beer tankards, English wines and ciders to local fruit and vegtables, plus much more.  Westgate Medieval Fayre is a spectacluar day for all.  You can expereience archery, try squiring training or see a battle re-enactment on the Cathedral Green.  There will be numerous demonstrations from the likes of Fletchers and the Plantagenet Medieval Society.

Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling

The Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling and Wake is an annual event held in May at Cooper's Hill near Cheltenham and Gloucester . Competitors race down the hill after a Double Gloucester cheese , and the first person over the line wins the cheese. In theory, competitors are aiming to catch the cheese, but since it has a second's head start and can reach speeds up to 70mph (enough to knock over and injure a spectator as it did in 1997), this rarely occurs.
