River Severn Bore Safety

Following the initial Severn Bore wave, there is a substantial rise in water level for a further hour or so and high tide is also about one hour after the Severn Bore wave has passed. Please take care where you stand to watch the bore or aegir and also where you park your vehicle. Occasionally, the rising waters have cut off spectators and their vehicles, needing rescue by the police. The danger is particularly great for viewers of the Severn Bore near Stonebench. At Gainsborough, viewers of the Trent Aegir are advised to stand on the inland side of the earth flood embankment.

In the interests of safety when watching the Severn Bore, all river users must:

• wear appropriate buoyancy aids
• navigate in a responsible manner in accordance with the International Rules for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea
• observe the speed limits
• avoid navigating too close to the river bank to avoid becoming trapped or hurt

In areas like Minsterworth where Severn Bore spectators congregate, powered craft must stay a reasonable distance behind the bore wave so those onlookers can also appreciated the spectacle of the bore. Driving powered craft through the crest of the b.ore wave is inconsiderate.
